Tyler Wright

Tyler Wright was born in March 31, 1994 in Culburra Beach, New South Wales, Australia. She learned to surf as a toddler, charging into the shorebreak with her 5 siblings (including older brother and future world tour star Owen Wright), all of whom were taught to surf by their father. As a child, Tyler and her family traveled Australia’s amateur contest scene almost nonstop in a six-bed passenger van.

In her teens, Tyler was one of Australia’s most dominant female surfing competitors. She won the Australian National Titles in multiple age categories in 2008-2009, became the youngest person, male or female, to ever win a major ASP event (the 2008 Beachley Classic; Tyler was 14), and took home the World Pro Junior championship in 2010. She made her full-time pro tour debut in 2011 and finished the year ranked fourth and easily winning Rookie of the Year honors.

Tyler is a powerful, stylish, function-over-form surfer. Her signature move, the “front side” hack, is without equal among women pros. She’s also a first-rate tuberider. Along with Carissa Moore of Hawaii, Tyler stepped directly onto the world tour as a likely successor to then-reigning world champion Australian, Stephanie Gilmore.

Tyler didn’t follow the sexpot trend embraced by many of her contemporary pros by surfing in full-coverage swimsuits rather than dental floss bikinis; while surfers like Alana Blanchard and Laura Enever starred in promo ads that doubled as fashion shoots.

Tyler Wright became the 2016 WSL Women’s World Champion.
