Stephanie Gilmore was born January 29, 1988 in Murwillumbah, Australia. Stephanie has dominated women’s professional surfing since she entered the scene in 2007 – winning a world title as a rookie and following with five titles in as many attempts – an accomplishment no other surfer, male or female, has achieved in the history of surfing.
In 2010, Stephanie was world surf champion when a brutal attack by a homeless man in Australia nearly ended her career. Suffering from a head wound and broken wrist, it took Stephanie 8 weeks to get back into the water. It took over a year for Stephanie to fully recover from her ordeal. Stephanie said, “After the incident, I really had to stop and look at everything. It made me think about what else I could achieve. It also gave me perspective and a little faith in the universe and the way things work.” So in 2012 she captured the world title. And for her triumphs, Stephanie has also been awarded both the Laureus World Sports Award in 2010, considered the most prestigious award in action sports worldwide, and has received two ESPN ESPYs for Female Action Sports Person in 2011 and 2013.
Stephanie has found her mojo again and states “You can pull a lot of things from surfing into your everyday life, and one of them is there’s always going to be another wave. If you fall off and get smashed, you can get back out there and have another chance.”
Stephanie is considered one of the world’s most stylish female surfers- a leader in women’s surfing, carving out her own path between the highest competition success and her free surfing abilities.
Back in 2014, Stephanie made Business Review Weekly’s Top 50 earners in Australian sport at $1.75m, where she was the highest paid Australian female athlete in the country. By 2016, she is currently the highest paid female surfer.
“A lot of my success comes down to finding balance in my life. If I wake up and there’s no surf, I’m not going, “Oh, I should do a hundred sit-ups.” I’m going to just enjoy exactly where I am.” You go girl. You’re a star!
