Lakey Peterson

Lakey Peterson was born, Laura Louise, on September 30, 1994 in Santa Barbara, California. She was just 5 years old when her parents took her and two older siblings and went on year-long tour of adventures around the world. On this trip Lakey was introduced to surfing in Manly Beach, Australia. It was at this beach she earned the nickname “Lakey Legend” from the local Aussies for her ease of acting wave after wave on her boogie board.

Lakey put her hold on surfing until the age of 12 when she won multiple NSSA titles. When she was only 14 years old, Lakey performed the first-ever female aerial maneuver in competition. By the time she turned 16, Lake was competing on the ASP World Qualifying Series and the Women’s World Tour. In 2011 she had won every event in the North American Junior Pro series securing her a place on the official WSL Women’s Championship Tour. In her “Rookie Year” on Tour, she won the prestigious 2012 U.S. Open of Surfing. With strong performances throughout 2013 and 2014, Lakey has consistently proved herself a force to be reckoned with.

During a surf contest in Fiji, Lakey watched as Nikki Van Dijk smashed her face into a reef. This accident definitely created fear and uncertainty of Lakey’s own ability to finish her heat. She talks about these fears and negative thoughts and how she had to overcome them in the video below called “Peterson’s 2015 Breakthroughs”.

Besides being a surf champion, this Californian surfer girl is also a committed philanthropist working with several non-profits for the greater good of humanity and the environment. Lakey also puts on a yearly surf contest for kids in her hometown of Santa Barbara, California.
