Alessa Quizon was born January 2, 1994 in Honolulu, Hawaii is now a Makaha resident. She was born into a classic Hawaiian surf family where her father would take her and her sister surfing on the Westside of Oahu to a beach called Makaha. She was only 7 years old at the time, but this little Hawaiian surfer girl was inspired enough to compete in the Rell Sunn Memorial contest 3 years late when she was 10 years old. When she was 12 Billabong became one of her first sponsors. In 2015 she was one of the top female surfers in the world ranking in the top 15 of the World Surf League Tour. But being a professional surfer has its challenges. “One thing that was really tough for me growing up and wanting to be a professional surfer was managing it along with school”, shares Alessa. So she ended up forfeiting the graduation route and getting her GED instead. Once that decision was made she went onto participate in the Billabong World Juniors in Australia, and ended up winning the entire event.
She is friends with her other Billabong team riders, Laura Enever and Courtney Conlogue and remains down to Earth and wholesome. Some of her favorite past times when she’s not surfing is to spearfish, dance, draw & paint.
Some of the best advice she’s gotten was from her dad who said “Win or lose, always have a smile on your face.” Not bad for a rock-solid determination of a female surfer who has had a lifelong love affair with the ocean and a clear sense of self and where she wants to go in life.
Words of wisdom about surfing: “I don’t just throw myself into a wave and let myself get pounded. I’ll study it, because it’s all about preparation. Then, when I feel like I can handle the wave, I throw myself out there.”
